As the Dominican Republic is a country that relies so much on tourism, it comes as no surprise that there is more than enough going on for any kind of holiday a visitor may wish to pursue. Be it simply laying on the beach and topping up the tan, exploring the unspoilt tropical wilderness or living it up with watersports and casinos – there is a holiday waiting for anyone in this beautiful, mesmerising country. Santo Domingo is often said to be one of the best holiday cities in the world, and with good cause. The colonial style of the ‘gateway to the Americas’ has been preserved and restored in a fantastic fashion, and this olde worlde feel is complemented perfectly by the Latino magic that the city exudes. ‘Colonial City’ is sure to be a draw for anyone visiting Santo Domingo – home to the Western Hemisphere’s first hospital, monastery, law court, cathedral and university, this fascinating look at the beginning of the New World is wonderfully preserved and sure to delight all those who see it. Travelling out of the colonial theme park and into the modern areas of the city visitors can take in all manner of activities that would be associated with any popular, modern city – discos, casinos and restaurants – all sitting side by side with the Gallery of Modern Art and the National Theatre. Elsewhere in the country are more than enough attractions to keep people busy, regardless of what they’re looking for. The main cities such as San Cristbal and Puerto Plata offer things like the Caves of Santa Maria, any number of purpose-built resorts, Mount Isabel de Torres and the ubiquitous white, sandy, beautiful beaches. Visitors looking for a more traditional look at life in the Dominican Republic are sure to want to leave the beaten track and see how the locals do things – the warm, friendly people are sure to welcome any budding adventurer and the taste of genuine DR life is something that many people won’t soon forget. Throw in the chance to explore the rainforest or take part in diving, windsurfing or any number of other watersports and the Dominican Republic shows that it can easily take care of anyone who comes to the country, regardless of what they’re looking for. The country is already a popular holiday destination, especially with North Americans around December to April when they flock en masse to escape the cold US winters. Even though this is the case, the country still remains generally unspoilt outside of the main tourist destinations and it is easy enough to get away from the hustle and bustle, into the genuine country. The Dominican Republic is an ideal tropical destination, providing luxury if required and everything else a person could want.
