There are no major safety concerns in the Dominican Republic itself, though due to recent unrest it is unadvisable to cross the border into Haiti. Petty crimes are common in tourist areas, so discretion is advised. Vaccination for a number of diseases may be required, but are not always necessary – check with a doctor before travelling. Bilharzia is endemic in the country, so paddling and swimming in fresh water should be avoided – chlorinated bodies of water are fine, however. Water should be boiled or otherwise sterilised before use. Meat and fish should be well cooked before consumption, and vegetables should be peeled and well cooked. Dairy products do carry risk, but milk is pasteurised and safe for consumption.
